WHAT IS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISM?
Unitarian Universalism (sometimes shortened to “UU”) is a caring, open-minded religion. We are united by shared values, not by creed or dogma. We are diverse in faith, ethnicity, history and spirituality, but aligned in our desire to make a difference for the good. Our tradition is an old one, going back many centuries to the formation of the United States and before. Our faith has included U.S. Presidents, luminaries for social justice and human rights, and great spiritual and scientific thinkers. We have developed a track record of standing on the side of love, advocating for inclusion and justice, and witnessing for peace. WHAT UUs BELIEVE
Great teachers of many faiths have stressed the worth and dignity of the human spirit, the relatedness of all peoples, and the importance of ethical behavior. These are core values for the UU religious movement. While our religious roots are Judeo-Christian, today’s Unitarian Universalists encompass a large spectrum of faith perspectives and spiritual beliefs. Our congregations affirm seven principles:
- The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
- Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
- A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
- The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
