Art 2012
THE 43rd ANNUAL ART FAIR AT THE NORTH SHORE UNITARIAN CHURCH
Saturday, April 28, 2012, 10 AM to 6 PM and Sunday, April 29, 2012 11 AM to 5 PM
The first Art Fair was held in 1970 to celebrate the arts, to showcase our building as the “work of art” it is, and to open our doors to neighbors in surrounding communities. Today, 40 years later, the tradition continues. Planned and produced by NSUC members and friends, this juried art show is known as one of finest in our area. We take pride in making ART FAIR an enjoyable experience for both the patron and the exhibitor.
Why is Art Fair 2012 important to NSUC?
Art Fair is a major fundraiser for our church. In addition to charging a nominal “booth fee,” NSUC retains 15% of all art sales.
Art Fair showcases our church in its unique architectural setting, the “work of art” it really is.
Art Fair helps build our church community. It’s an all-volunteer effort; it relies on the hands of many people. As some previous volunteers have said, “Work for Art Fair. You’ll meet some of your best new church friends there.”
ART FAIR 2012 asks for your support! Here’s how YOU can help!
- PUBLICIZE THE EVENT! ADMISSION IS FREE!
- Invite your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, everybody!
- Distribute Art Fair publicity postcards anywhere you think people might be interested in such a fun event….the PTA, your doctor’s office, your local library, Starbucks, local restaurants…use your imagination! Pick up a stack of postcards Sundays at church.
- Post Art Fair flyers all around your home community – coffee shops, grocery stores, libraries, book stores, etc. These fliers will be available at church on Sundays.
- Send the colorful e-mail Art Fair announcement to everyone in your address book; this announcement will be forwarded to you via e-mail from the church. If you don’t receive one by April 3, or are not on the church e-mail list as yet, please let us know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
- VOLUNTEER to work. Stop at the ART FAIR CENTRAL table in Fellowship Hall (Sundays in April) to learn what’s needed and to sign up for the tasks of your choice. Many, many volunteer man-hours are needed to run the show.
- DONATE: Will you donate $25 to help “sponsor” Art Fair? All donations Art Fair receives will help offset the cost of operating the show; the money will go directly to the church. Checks payable to “NSUC, Attention Art Fair” can be mailed to the church (Attn: Art Fair), left at the Art Fair Central table on Sundays, or put in the Art Fair mail slot.
- ATTEND THE SHOW, of course: Remember, this is the perfect place to shop for all those gift-giving occasions throughout the coming year…and for yourself, of course. And remember, 15% of all your purchases is tax deductible.
The NSUC Art Fair is an all-volunteer operation. It has been successful over these many years due to the numerous people from our church community who devote their time and energy to the cause.
What are you interests? Would you like to be involved in this kind of great venture? The Art Fair Steering Committee welcomes YOU. Planning work is needed every year in the following areas:
Artist Recruitment and Selection
The Art Fair is always looking for the right mix of high quality artists and artisans for the show. Recruitment starts in the summer and ends in the fall by sending applications to potential exhibitors. In February, a jury composed of congregation members selects artists for the Art Fair. This group is responsible for collecting and distributing applications, selecting and convening the jury, informing artists of the results, and welcoming and assisting them at show time.
Event Advertisement and Publicity
The Art Fair is open to the public and advertising is key to a successful show. This group is responsible for an overall “promotions” campaign. The campaign would include designing, printing and distributing flyers, posters and post cards, as well as placing ads in regional newspapers, magazines, and websites and arranging feature stories on the fair.
Personnel and Staffing
Art Fair weekend requires an enormous number of people to work at this all-church event. This group is responsible for volunteer recruitment for Art Fair weekend. Duties include manning a sign-up table after Sunday services in April and supervising volunteers during Art Fair weekend.
Logistics
This group creates the layout of the church for Art Fair weekend, including artist space assignments. It handles lighting and electrical needs, equipment rentals, prepares and installs internal directional signs, and oversees building set-up before the show and clean-up afterward.
Finance
The Finance Team oversees all financial –based transactions both before, during and after the show. Responsibilities of this group include: collect artists’ fees; process all Art Fair bills for payment; recruit and train Cashiers and Finance Office workers and manage the Finance Office during the show – prepare and balance cash boxes, prepare credit card equipment and balance transactions, count money, and prepare bank deposits. This group also reconciles all artist sales and processes final checks to the artists.
Food Service
The Artist Palate Café sells food and beverages throughout Art Fair weekend. The food group is responsible for buying the supplies, preparing the food, and supervising café volunteers. It also obtains any necessary food permits from the Lake County Health Department.
Entertainment
The Art Fair provides musical entertainment in the Sanctuary on Saturday and Sunday. This team is responsible for recruiting and scheduling performers during the show.
Artist Raffle
The 65+ Art Fair exhibitors donate pieces of their work to raffle off during Art Fair weekend. This team is responsible for raffle ticket sales, collecting the donated works, scheduling the drawings, and contacting the winners.
Children's Art Workshop
The Children's Art Workshop, named for its founder and beloved long-time member of NSUC, Joy Hodgen, is open to children ages 4-12 throughout Art Fair weekend. It offers a one-hour, hands-on art enrichment experience for the children while their parents enjoy the show. This group is responsible for choosing projects, buying and collecting materials and supplies, and supervising the volunteers.
